Figure IV: 8 Athenian red-figure cup, from the Athenian Agora, c. 500 BC. Diam. c. 18 cm.

However, further study has suggested that, although close, the cup belongs somewhere on the borders of the artist, allied but not identical (Kurtz 1983). This disassociation of the cup from the Berlin Painter is rather ironic as the cup is signed by a potter, a man called Gorgos, and there was always the possibility that he may have been a painter as well. Such is the instinctive yearning for names! That nexus of associations that Beazley built up is still able to cope with the fine tuning – indeed it must do so; the worst service that the followers of the method can do is to assume that Beazley’s work is set in concrete. ‘There is no place for a Bible in scholarship’ (Robertson 1992a: 6).
